Frequently Asked Questions

Will a better motherboard increase FPS?

No, the motherboard has no direct effect on gaming performance. Instead, the graphics card and CPU determine how much gaming FPS your gaming PC can generate. Sure, a cheap motherboard may not be able to keep up with a powerful GPU’s heat and power demands, which can lead to thermal throttling and reduced performance. However, simply upgrading to a better motherboard alone, such as one of the above-mentioned best AMD motherboards, will not drastically improve gaming FPS. A well-built and equipped motherboard is necessary for stable gaming performance, but spending on high-end boards does not guarantee higher FPS. To get the most out of your games, see our game optimization guide using benchmarks and in-game settings.

Is AM5 better than AM4?

AM5 is AMD’s latest platform for their Ryzen 7000 CPUs and beyond. The platform has several next-generation features, such as PCIe 5.0 and DDR5, and support for higher-power CPUs compared to AM4. Therefore, purely based on performance, AM5 is better than AM4, but it would be best to consider the cost of upgrading to the platform. Some users may be smart with their money and choose to stay on the older AM4 platform due to significantly cheaper CPUs, motherboards and memory.

How long does the AM5 connector last?

AMD has confirmed support for the AM5 socket until 2025. It will likely extend beyond 2025, considering the track record of the last generation AM4 platform, which lasted from 2017 to 2022. Launched in 2022, the AM5 platform will likely receive new generations of CPUs well into 2026 and possibly 2027.

Is it worth upgrading to AM5?

It depends on. For users building a new gaming PC, it makes sense to buy a new platform that is both future-proof and more powerful than the previous AM4 platform. Also, those with older generation systems powered by Ryzen 2000, 9th Gen Intel series or comparable CPUs should strongly consider upgrading to the latest AM5 platform for a big jump in performance. However, if you have newer chips, such as Ryzen 4000, Ryzen 5000 or Intel 12th generation CPUs, upgrading to AM5 is not yet worth it.
