The delivery date for pre-orders will be on the same date.
RTX 4070 laptop vs RTX 3070 notebook performance and specs
Well-known gamer Mechrevo has come out with some hot graphs showing the performance of the RTX 4070 laptop GPU compared to the previous generation RTX 3070 laptop on synthetic benchmarking applications 3DMark Time Spy and 3DMark Fire Strike. Time Spy is the newer test that uses DirectX 12 and renders at 1440p, while Fire Strike is DX11-based and renders at 1080p.
These tests are obviously not the same as in-game FPS benchmarks, but they can give us a good idea of the relative performance, and the results are significantly less impressive than the predicted performance improvements of the RTX 4060 notebook GPU compared to its predecessor. , reflecting disappointments on the RTX 4070 desktop variant. 11% – 15% improvement isn’t really worth several hundred dollars more in asking price, especially when many RTX 3070 laptops are experiencing price drops.
Still, the performance below doesn’t count the extra boosts in games that you should get thanks to DLSS 3.0 (at least in those titles that support it), which might make it worth the increased asking price compared to the RTX 3070 notebook lineup (although we have to wait for independent benchmarking to confirm).
As you can see below, the newer GPU actually has fewer CUDA cores and a smaller memory bus than its predecessor, with the gains it has in clock speed being the result of the new architecture it’s based on, which allows it to still perform better at despite having a lower TGP.
|RTX 4070 mobile||RTX 3070 mobile|
|Clock speed||2.175 GHz||1.560 GHz|
|VRAM||8 GB GDDR6||8 GB GDDR6|
|Memory bandwidth||unknown||384 GB/s|
RTX 4070 Notebook vs RTX 3070 Desktop (Rumor Specs)
Looking at the specs below, we can (unsurprisingly) see that there are even more CUDA cores in the RTX 3070 desktop variant compared to the RTX 4070 portable GPU, the same larger 256-bit memory bus that was in the RTX 3070 mobile, but while the clock speed is higher than the previous generation mobile variant, it still falls short of the new RTX 4070 portable GPU.
We haven’t seen any actual benchmarks yet to judge the comparable performance of these, but we do know that RTX 3070 desktops can outperform their laptop counterparts by 20-40%, which could mean (if we extrapolate from the leaked benchmark graphs above ) they still outperform RTX 4070 notebook GPUs by 5-25% (excluding DLSS 3.0). Time will tell if this is as accurate.
|RTX 4070 mobile||RTX 3070 desktop|
|Clock speed||2.175 GHz||1.725 GHz|
|VRAM||8 GB GDDR6||8 GB GDDR6|
|Memory bandwidth||unknown||448.0 GB/s|
RTX 4070 Notebook vs RTX 4070 Desktop (Rumor Specs)
As with all desktop variants, it is very likely that the RTX 4070 will eclipse the RTX 4070 laptop GPU by some margin. You can see the comparison of the specifications below.
|RTX 4070 mobile||RTX 4070 desktop|
|Clock speed||2.175 GHz||2.475 GHz|
|VRAM||8 GB GDDR6||12 GB GDDR6X|
